The MCLIMS PTO Executive Board wishes to propose 2 changes to our governing document. We will review the reasons for these changes and take a general vote at the next General PTO meeting which will be held Wednesday, September 4th in the evening at 6:45pm.
The first change is to make all parents, teachers and staff automatic members of the PTO, not conditioned upon payment of dues. We will reserve the right to set voluntary dues in the future, but for this year we will not charge dues. Our organizational mission, as stated in the Bylaws of the MCLIMS Parent Teacher Organization, is “…purpose of the organization shall be to enhance and support the unique learning environment at the Mandarin Chinese Language Immersion Magnet School, to create open, close communication between the school and home, and to involve all stakeholders in the children’s well being and development. The PTO especially strives to support the teachers and administration in creating a positive, enriching environment for all students at the school through volunteer and financial support.” We believe by removing restrictions to membership, we will be able to: truly involve all of our stakeholders; improve communication between the school and home; and provide more opportunities for collaboration and support for teachers as well as encouragement for language learners and their families.
The second change would allow electronic funds payment of bills, which was previously prohibited. We would continue to require oversight by 2 account signers on these payments. Many of our vendors prefer to be paid electronically, and it is much easier for us to submit our sales tax payments online as well.

Mr. Dane Roberts comes to MCLIMS from KIPP Houston Public Schools, where he
was a founding 6th grade teacher for one of its highest-performing middle
schools, KIPP Sharpstown College Prep. While there, he served as a writing
and social studies department chair, a grade-level chair, and a mentor for
first-year teachers. Mr. Roberts just finished his MBA for School Leaders
through Rice University¹s Jones School of Business. He and his wife Emily
have four children, including a 2nd grader and kindergartner at MCLIMS.
Prior to moving to Houston five years ago, Mr. Roberts taught for five
years in Albuquerque Public Schools in New Mexico. He received his
bachelor¹s degree magna cum laude in Philosophy and History from the
University of Pittsburgh.
Personally, he has loved having his children at MCLIMS and is committed to
its mission and vision. Professionally, he is looking forward to using his
experience of creating a middle school from the ground up to continue
building an exemplary PK-8 school at MCLIMS.
Principal Chang will be hosting some Meet and Greets to solicit feedback from parents starting 7/12/13. The purpose of the meeting is for Mr. Chang to hear any concerns/solutions you may have for the school. Check the PTO Facebook or newsletter to RSVP for the Meet & Greet and find out the times.
If you have an incoming PK student, please mark down 6-7pm on August 20th for a special session just for PK students. The principal and PK teachers will be on hand to explain some of the routines and expectations for students and start getting them acclimated to MCLIMS in a smaller group than the big Meet your Teacher night.
The Project Advisory Team (PAT) meeting has been rescheduled to Thursday July 11, 2013 at 12:00pm. We also we have a new contact for this project and it is Dave Funk instead of Ms. Jenkins. Please see the PAT link for more information.
